One of the questions we get asked most often, is “what can I put in my skip?”.
Skips are a great way to get rid of your waste
Whether you’re looking to dispose of waste from a garden project or a house clearance, a skip is a perfect solution. There are however some things that we can’t accept in our skips. To help our customers to understand which items they can’t put in their skip and alternative ways to dispose of them, we’ve created this handy infographic.
If you’re still not sure whether we can accept your waste, please contact our friendly team and we’ll be happy to advise you. Alternatively, if you want something to be disposed of, that you can’t put in your skip, call us as we do offer alternative methods of waste disposal.
What can’t go in my skip?
Medical Waste
You can’t place any medical or clinical waste in your skip. Any medical waste that belongs to an individual can be collected by your local authority. In a commercial setting, you need to contact a waste company, such as Dial a Bin, to dispose of your waste.
Hazardous Waste
Hazardous is quite broad, but generally, if it contains chemical or bleach don’t put it in your skip. If in doubt, you can ask your skip provider.
Food
Food can’t go in your skip. Most councils provide bins for food and garden waste, or you could even compost at home.
Gas Bottles
Gas bottles, even empty ones, can’t be put in your skip. Most gas bottle suppliers will accept the bottle back without a charge.
Appliances
Due to the materials in appliances, most can’t be put in a skip. These items can be collected by the council or you can speak to your skip hire company to see if they offer a separate disposal service.
Tyres
Normally, if your tyres are changed at a garage they will dispose of your old tyres. If this isn’t the case you can contact your council to check if your recycling centre accepts them.
How can I get rid of the rest of my waste?
Social Media
Most towns and cities have Facebook groups for selling and swapping items. These groups can be a great way of disposing of appliances that you no longer want, but that still work.
Local Authority
With some of your waste, you can request that your local authority comes to collect it. They will often charge you for this, but they will generally collect domestic appliances as well as private medical waste.
Recycle at Home
Some of your waste can be recycled at home. Food, for example, can be placed in a composting bin, or in a garden waste bin if you have one.
Contact a Waste Company
Although you can’t put some things in your skip, your waste removal provider may be able to collect the items separately. You can contact the team at Dial a Bin for a quote.
